The Year-long Workshop to Write Your Novel or Memoir

A Novel Approach Second Draft

A NOVEL APPROACH SECOND DRAFT is designed to help you prepare your FICTION or MEMOIR manuscript (and yourself) for the challenges of the publication process.

SECOND DRAFT IS DIVIDED INTO 3 STEPS:

STEP 1:
Obtain a SUBSTANTIVE EDIT

We read your manuscript carefully, keeping detailed notes about what is working well and what could be even better. This is not a copy edit, although we will make recommendations in the manuscript if we identify any spelling, grammar, unclear phrasing or other writing errors.

We offer two types of Substantive Edit.

VERSION ONE: DETAILED REPORT: ($1,260 + hst)
A detailed report covers the critically important aspects of successful story-telling as outlined on the Substantive Edit page. This comprehensive approach is designed to educate new and emerging writers in the essential building blocks of novels and memoirs. The report, including rewrite recommendations, is emailed to you and discussed in detail in a supportive, informative 90 minute online zoom or telephone chat format. (your choice)

VERSION TWO: BETA READY SUMMARY ($595 + hst)
This version is designed for authors who are comfortable in the writer’s craft and do not need detailed reporting. If your manuscript is ready, but you would like a beta read of your manuscript before submitting to agents and publishers, this is the best option. Instead of a detailed report, we prepare a one page Hi-Lo Summary. The report is emailed to you and discussed in a one hour overview online zoom or telephone chat format. (your choice)

If you choose to continue with STEP 2 of our SECOND DRAFT process (PLAN YOUR REWRITE and FINISH IT) and STEP 3 (NAVIGATE the PUBLISHING MARKETPLACE with CONFIDENCE) our recommendations will guide your rewrite and improve your chances of finding an agent and publisher.

(SUBSTANTIVE EDITS are available anytime during the year.)

STEP 2:
PLAN YOUR REWRITE and FINISH IT.

Your availability determines how the rewrite process will proceed, so we employ the Online Mentorship format because it offers the most flexibility. You purchase 10 hours at a time ($700 + hst) which covers the time spent by your substantive editor reading your rewritten chapters, emailing them back to you with comments, then discussing them in an online zoom chat (or telephone).

This process is designed to work on a biweekly timetable like the First Draft workshop, but if you prefer to work more quickly, or take longer, we track the time spent in your 10 hour block and keep you informed of your progress. Any unused hours are refundable.

STEP 3:
Learn how to NAVIGATE the PUBLISHING MARKETPLACE with CONFIDENCE in an intensive 8 week workshop led by James Dewar starting Wednesday evening, January 12th, 2022.

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO COMPLETE PARTS 1 and 2 to REGISTER FOR THE 8 WEEK INTENSIVE. However, to maximize the feedback you receive it would be ideal if James reviews your manuscript prior to the start of the workshop. He recommends participants purchase the BETA READY SUMMARY option before the Intensive begins.

Each of the three segments should be taken consecutively to maximize the value of the learning experience and the story-refining process. Some authors, however, prefer to take breaks between the segments, so each segment is priced seperately for this reason.

PLEASE NOTE: Sue Reynolds accepts a limited number of Second Draft MEMOIR manuscripts each year. If you have written a MEMOIR and would like Sue Reynolds as your Substantive Edit Mentor, please indicate this when registering.

Sue Reynolds and James Dewar are both certified in and affiliates of the AWA (Amherst Writers & Artists) Method of leading workshops.
