The Year-long Workshop to Write Your Novel or Memoir

Second Draft

A Novel Approach Second Draft is a 3 PART PROCESS for novelists and memoirists who have completed the first draft and who now want help polishing a manuscript and learning the skills needed to pitch it to agents and publishers.

PART 1: Obtain a SUBSTANTIVE EDIT of your manuscript.

LEARN MORE ABOUT OUR SUBSTANTIVE EDIT PROCESS HERE

Registration opens on July 1st and closes on December 15th, 2019.

A Word copy of your manuscript should be delivered to us (by email, Dropbox or a similar method) when you register. If you need more time, please ask us about an extension.

We will meet for the Substantive Edit discussion at a mutually agreed upon time and place approximately 4 to 6 weeks after your manuscript is received.

PART 2: Plan your REWRITE and Complete it over the next 6 months.

LEARN MORE ABOUT OUR 6 MONTH REWRITE PROCESS HERE.

The 11 revision dates start on Thursday, January 9th, 2020 and continue biweekly until May 28th, 2020.

The completion target is June 30th, 2019, allowing participants to relax over the summer before joining the Part 3 Intensive Workshop starting in September, 2020.

The combination of working in a group with other writers and meeting revision deadlines is a key feature of the success of A Novel Approach Second Draft.

PART 3: Complete the 9 week Intensive Group Workshop: Preparing You and Your Book for the Marketplace.

LEARN MORE ABOUT OUR 9 WEEK GET PUBLISHED INTENSIVE WORKSHOP HERE.

Available once a year on 9 consecutive Thursday evenings (6:30 – 9:30) starting September 10th, 2020 at Uplands.

NOTE: James accepts authors into the 9 week Intensive only if he has read the author’s second draft manuscript before the workshop starts. If you intend to take the 9 week intensive and have not completed your second draft with James, a reading fee of $400 will be assessed for James to read your manuscript.
The deadline for submission of manuscripts is July 31st.

Each of the three segments should be taken consecutively to maximize the value of the learning experience and the story-refining process. Some writers, however, prefer to take breaks between the segments, so each segment is priced individually.

PLEASE NOTE: Sue Reynolds accepts a limited number of Second Draft MEMOIR manuscripts each year. If you have written a MEMOIR and would like Sue Reynolds as your Substantive Edit Mentor, please indicate this when registering.
