β€œThe teaching of craft can be done without damage to a writer’s original voice or artistic self-esteem.”
― Pat Schneider (the 4th precept of the AWA Method)

Second Draft

A NOVEL APPROACH SECOND DRAFT is designed to help you prepare your manuscript (and yourself) for the challenges of the publication process.
Sue works with MEMOIRISTS and NOVELISTS.
James assists NOVELISTS and POETS.
Several start times are available throughout the year. Each of the THREE STEPS are optional and priced individually to suit your needs.

The recommended process:
1. Obtain a SUBSTANTIVE EDIT. (We have two kinds available.)

2. Once the substantive edit has been discussed in detail with you, we will help you draw up a plan to FINISH YOUR REWRITE.
Both of these approaches are offered as individual MENTORSHIPS.

3. Once your rewrite is completed, James offers his NAVIGATE THE PUBLISHING MARKETPLACE WITH CONFIDENCE workshop every January and February.

STEP 1: Obtain a SUBSTANTIVE EDIT of your COMPLETED FIRST DRAFT

We offer two types of Substantive Edit.

VERSION ONE: A METICULOUS SUMMARY. ($1,260 + hst)

VERSION TWO: A TWO PAGE KEY TALKING POINTS SUMMARY ($560 + hst)

If you choose to continue with STEP 2 of our SECOND DRAFT process (PLAN YOUR REWRITE and FINISH IT), our recommendations will guide your rewrite and improve your chances of finding an agent and publisher.

STEP 2: PLAN YOUR REWRITE and FINISH IT.

Your availability determines how the rewrite process will proceed, so we employ the A NOVEL APPROACH MENTORSHIP (online format) because it offers the most flexibility.

Participants purchase 10 hours at a time ($700 + hst) which covers the time spent by your substantive editor reading your rewritten chapters, emailing them back to you with comments, then discussing them in an online zoom chat (or telephone) every two weeks.

This process is designed to work on a biweekly timetable like the First Draft workshop, but if you prefer to work more quickly, or prefer an extended timetable, we simply track the time spent and keep you informed of your progress. (All unused hours are refundable.)

We have found that many writers require 2 Mentorship 10 hour blocks to complete a rewrite.

Once your rewrite is complete, we are confident that you and your manuscript will be ready to test the publishing marketplace.

Many of out First and Second Draft authors increase their chances of publication by taking our NAVIGATE the PUBLISHING MARKETPLACE with CONFIDENCE workshop.

This 8 WEEK INTENSIVE WORKSHOP provides an in-depth focus on writing the query, synopsis, elevator pitch and tagline for your book that you will need to attract the attention of publishers and agents.
